Coloured crutches -Back in business in 2011!
Its been a tough start to 2011 for Stand Out Crutches.
We were isolated in the devastating QLD floods, so we couldn’t get orders in or out (our place was OK but roads around us were blocked for a couple of weeks) And we have had delays with our last shipment of coloured crutches from Germany which should be here ANY DAY now (thanks to those patiently waiting). Still we have nothing to complain about compared to others (see this post on my physio trip to Murphy’s Creek http://massageproject.com/2011/01/24/the-massage-project-on-the-road/)
However life goes on and we are looking to go on with things in a BIG way in 2011. In 2010 we were happy to bring coloured crutches to Australia for the first time. And now our coloured crutches are already in many hospitals and private residences around the country.
But they are still not as widely available as we would like (other than via the internet from this website) So in 2011 our aim is to get coloured crutches available from EVERY hospital, and a large range of mobility aid suppliers. People should be able to choose whether they have grey (uncomfortable) crutches or coloured (fashionable and comfortable) ones.
We are also looking to have some cool new features with our crutches (its top secret for now, more on this to come soon -stay posted!)
So if you know somewhere that doesn’t have our coloured crutches, we would really appreciate you telling them to contact us (or let us know who they are and we’ll contact them) We really want to bring some colour to the lives of those using crutches in 2011!
The Massage Project
The Massage Project is now underway for 2011!
The idea of this project is to see the effects that a massage every day for a year will have on someone with a chronic health condition. See www.massageeveryday.com for more details.
What does this have to do with coloured crutches? Well as a physiotherapist if I had to say one thing that I see over and over again that affects people’s health its a problem receiving. Some of the most giving people I know (carers, charity workers, other therapists) often struggle to receive and look after themselves, whether its massage or something else. Common reasons are that its too expensive, I’m not worth it, I would but someone else needs my time, the money could go on something more important etc
I see the same thing when I see people using cheap, boring and uncomfortable crutches. For those who are forced to have to use crutches every day, surely you are worth enough to get a better pair that are more comfortable, brighter and make you feel better? The funny thing is when people do spend more on themselves and receive more, they are better able to handle stress and help other people more.
So have a look at the massage project (www.massageeveryday.com) I hope it inspires you to think about how you can give more if you receive more first. And that adding brightness and colour to your day is always a good thing!
Coloured crutches and Christmas?
What do coloured crutches have to do with Christmas?
Well as I sit here writing this post, I am looking around at our beautiful coloured lights we have up around the house and I am reminded how much colour makes our day, and how light brightens up our mood and makes us feel alive.
I also look across the room at a candle that has on the side “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle” (attributed to St Francis – whose love for animals has always inspired my wife and I . See our horse rescue charity www.charliesangels.org.au) Think about the light from an ordinary candle or a lightbulb compared to the Christmas lights all around us this time of year. Is the light from a coloured candle (light) even better than the plain lights that we know every night?
Can a single pair of coloured crutches light up a life? I’ve seen that it can. I know the effect of a child using coloured crutches at the beach, in a white/grey hospital or when an adult with a disability goes out to a party wearing crutches that match their outfit. The crutches seem to radiate with light and colour standing out from the surroundings in a way that a grey or wooden crutch never could. Judge for yourself if you ever see some of our coloured crutches in action. You’ll see what a gift colour is.
Christmas is a beautiful time for family, for hope in the world, to give and receive and to be grateful for what we have. A lot of us at Christmas are not blessed with the best of health, but we too can shine.
My wife and I decided we want to leave the coloured lights up this year, after Christmas. They’ll remind us of the importance of keeping colour and light in our lives.
Merry Christmas everyone from our family at Stand Out Crutches to yours!
Standing out!
Want a great example of not just standing up but standing out?
If you were lucky enough to see Channel Seven’s Sunday program tonight you would have seen the amazing story of Tate who has Cerebral Palsy and his loving brother Nash whose love is a joy to behold. Tate after previous failed attempts, and nearly running out of steam this time completed a marathon! He wants to complete his next marathon without his walker, so we have offered a donation of a pair of coloured crutches for his next attempt. Truly Tate and Nash show you can do anything in life!

Keep on standing out boys!
Coloured crutches -Why just stand up when you can stand out? The Top 10 reasons to choose your colour!
So why should you use coloured crutches over standard crutches?
The Top 10 reasons you should go c o l o u r e d (with apologies to David Letterman)
2/ They save you energy (the design is more ergonomic than conventional crutches, and saves around 30% energy compared to underarm crutches in particular) Anyone who has used crutches knows how tiring they are to use!
3/ You can choose a colour that reflects your personality (there are designer sunglasses so why not designer crutches?)
4/ You will get much more attention and recognition than if you are “just another person using crutches” You really will stand out!
5/ You can choose a colour that matches your choice of outfits. It is VERY hard to colour co-ordinate clothes with grey or wooden coloured crutches!
6/ The tips are silent (no more clattering down the hall with your crutches and everyone knows you are coming) Very useful for any ninjas out there needing to be on crutches!
7/ You can name your own colour combination (see our post below on name your crutches) that no-one else has come up with before. Your name will live on any time anyone else comes up with your colour combo in the future they will see your name!
8/ They really cheer up someone who has an injury or disability (particularly kids) who are forced to use crutches. Colour has been shown to improve mood, coloured crutches brighten up lives (and hospitals!)
9/ The grips are totally non-slip. Our crutches also won’t cause chafing or potential nerve injury that can occur using underarm crutches.
10/ Previously not available anywhere else, they are only available currently through our website from a reliable manufacturer in business over 100 years. Be amongst the first to have fashion, stylish designer crutches in a range of colours, or design your own. You have the right to choose your colour, that makes you feel good when you go out into the world! When everyone else is just standing up, you can stand out!
Beat the price rise!
Buy coloured crutches now and beat the price rise! Our massive $40 off our entire range discount was due to end tonight, but we have extended the deadline by a few days, so you now have until midnight 4th October to purchase some of our fanstastic coloured crutches at much lower prices. Act now, because this discount won’t be repeated (it was a one-off as a thank you to all those who have supported this new product in Australia). Go HERE to choose your colours!
In other news our crutches are now at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and are on their way to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and the Women and Children’s hospital in SA. They are also at Independent Living Centres around the country! So our crutches are getting out into the world, brightening up the hospital wards with colour! If you know any hospitals/organisations that would like to know more about our crutches range please have them email us standoutcrutches@live.com.au We also have a special discount for hospitals and organisations, but this offer also must end soon, so you need to act soon!
Thanks again to everyone who is spreading the word about our coloured crutches, it is much appreciated. We get a real sense of satisfaction knowing we are helping make the world a brighter place!
Name your crutches!
“Choose your colour!” is on our logo for standout crutches, because we believe people should have the right to choose what colours they wear into the world, whether they have a disability or not. We have been very inspired by all the custom coloured crutches designs people have been choosing, particularly the children’s colours. We have some really great designers out there! The colours that people have chosen really show off their individual flair fashion sense and personality.
We really wanted to reward such individuality so we came up with the idea of “Naming Your Crutches”. If you order a set of custom crutches you have the opportunity to name the crutches ANY NAME YOU LIKE and we will reserve that colour for you. We will put your colour choice and the name you chose up on the website, along with a short few lines on what this colour scheme means to you. And if anyone wants to order your colour scheme in the future they will order it seeing the name you have chosen. Once a unique colour scheme is chosen, only YOU have the right to name it, no-one else!
So how does it work? Choose a colour scheme by going to the colour selector for adults HERE or children HERE. Then come back to our site and order a Design your Own Crutch through our shop online section (ONLY this month $40 off!) IF no-one else has chosen the same colour as you, you get the naming rights! We will email you if you are eligible to name the crutches, and then you can email us back the name you have chosen and why you chose the colours you did. Have fun creating wonderful colour combos!
Some of our custom crutches and some names the designers have chosen so far Hover over the images for the names that have been chosen.

I like the toys and the movies and these crutches reminded me of the robots in disguise maybe they transform into crutches!
Please note Names must not be offensive and we reserve the right to refuse a name at our discretion.
